Silver Based Anti-Bacterial

Silver-based antibacterials, primarily using silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and silver ions (Ag+), work through multiple, simultaneous mechanisms to kill bacteria, including multidrug-resistant strains. They are widely used in medical devices, wound dressings, and consumer products, though their use requires careful management due to potential toxicity concerns at high concentrations.

Membrane disruption: Positively charged silver ions are attracted to the negatively charged bacterial cell wall and membrane, disrupting their structure and increasing permeability. This leads to the leakage of essential cellular components.
Protein and enzyme deactivation: Once inside the cell, silver ions bind to electron-donor groups like sulfur and phosphorus in essential proteins and enzymes, deactivating them. This interference suppresses cell respiration and disrupts metabolic pathways, ultimately terminating ATP production.
DNA interference: Silver ions can enter the cell and interact with DNA, causing it to condense and preventing replication and cell division. They can also cause DNA damage through the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS).
